In the early spring of 2018, I read in the city newspaper that there was a front yard garden design competition hold by the city of Herentals where I live, the meaning is to encourage residents to organize their front yards in an orderly manner to enhance the city appearance.
Since gardening is my passion, I decided to take part in the competition.
My front yard design was based on three main points:
First, I live next to a forest with different pine trees, and I had planted different types of conifers in the front yard, which match well with the surrounding , so although it is an oriental garden, not only it does not look abrupt or inconsistent with the surrounding, but it harmoniously integrated.

Second, I originally wanted to use thick bamboo as a fence to create an oriental atmosphere. The space would be more private, but in this case, the garden could not be enjoyed by passers-by, so I kept the original low fence to share the view.
Third, I built a hexagonal pavilion in the front yard, which is a place to drink tea, watch the scenery, and rest. (I even played Mahjong with a few Taiwanese friends in the hexagonal pavilion once).

To keep it short, at the end I have won the first prize. ( otherwise you won’t read this article here :-).
I was very pleased with the result, although I had confidence in my design, but after all, winning a competition involves a bit of luck too. I am very happy to be favored by the jury.
It is as a milestone for me who has been gardening for many years. I will keep digging:-).
